More likely to play Reykjavik than Detroit, and more potential to firing songs on flexi-discs in Dutch amusing books than bring home the roger Bacon MP3s on their website, Shellac (or Shellac of North America) operated completely outside the distinctive machinations of the music cook up -- their press sheets typically exclaimed "no give up lunch," referring to promo copies -- and trio carved out a healthy recess as a minimalist rock band.

Started in an intimate setting betwixt infamous locomotive engineer and guitar player Steve Albini (ex-Just Ducky, Big Black, Rapeman) and drummer Todd Trainer (ex-Rifle Sport, Brick Layer Cake) in 1992, Shellac came into full formation subsequently Albini invited bassist Bob Weston (ex-Sorry, Volcano Suns) to actuate to Chicago, employing him as an engine driver at his studio. A clutch of singles soon appeared in 1993 and 1994 on Touch and Go and Drag City, passably following in the footsteps of Albini's Big Black and Rapeman, if only due to his trebly, film editing guitar forge and unexpressive vocals. As with Big Black, Shellac provided a assembly for Albini to air his thoughts on the uglier side of humanness, though letting down the perversity and upping the humour a pass. (An former call was that all Shellac songs concerned either baseball or Canada, sometimes both in the like song.) The singular rhythms of Trainer and grumbling basso of Weston, however, clearly removed Shellac from whatever of the members' premature involvements.

The trio's first LP, At Action Park, appeared in recent 1994. Four years passed until their proper follow-up, Terraform, which was recorded practically sooner than its spillage date but was delayed due to nontextual matter clearance. Recorded on several dates in 1998 and 1999, their third full-length, thou Hurts, was released in the recent summertime of 2000. Excellent Italian Greyhound followed intimately vII broad eld later, featuring several songs the band had been playing unrecorded for quite some time. The ring besides recorded a seance for John Peel, gave aside a recording made for a ballet to 779 friends, and had a live show released in Japan by chum K.K. Null. Other singles and numerous compilation appearances featured Shellac, including a cover of AC/DC's "Breakout" for a Skin Graft digest.

Though each of the members had even jobs to tend to (Albini and Weston kept busy enough functional with other bands), Shellac toured at a sporadic pace, unremarkably in geographic locations they wanted to travel to, and ofttimes played in unlawful confines such as riverboats. Between-song raillery was more likely to consist of question-and-answer roger Huntington Sessions with the crowd than proclamations of how a great deal the band liked the city they were in. Sharing a skewed sense of temper that is fully unmistakable in their recordings and excellent packaging, it was possible that a concertgoer could walk away from a Shellac depict with anything ranging from an autographed baseball to visions of Weston in a bunny girl outfit.
